I didn’t check on Clint every time I woke up because the poor man needed to sleep. But there was no way anyone could expect me to make it all night without checking on him at least once.

Tiptoeing down the hall, I peeked around for the cats. Mama cat was on my bed, but the kittens had ventured off hours ago.

I stepped into the living room and slapped a hand over my mouth. With his feet propped up on one arm of the sofa, Clint was stretched out on his back, and all the kittens were in a giant knot on his chest.

Even after traveling all over the world, this ranked as one of the wonders. Maybe it didn’t rank in the top seven, but definitely in the top ten.

I stayed an extra second, watching the kittens rise and fall as Clint breathed in and out.

Friends. If I pounded that word into my head, maybe this attraction would subside.

I had my doubts.

Satisfied that he’d live through the night, I slid under the covers, burrowed my feet next to Mama Cat, and closed my eyes.

Hours later, I woke up and sprang out of bed. I needed to make Clint coffee before running out to do chores.

Kittens blew past me as I hurried down the hall.

Clint smiled from the sofa and lifted a mug. “Morning.”

“You didn’t stay off the foot, did you?”

Mischief danced in his eyes. “Would you believe me if I said the cats made coffee?”

“No. They aren’t mice, and I’m not Cinderella.” I poured myself a cup. “Want breakfast before I head out?”

“I’ll get myself some toast. You don’t have to wait on me.”

I yanked on my boots. “I’m not going to argue with you.”

“I like that plan.”

As I walked out to the barn, my phone rang. It was early for a phone call from Ava.

“Hello?”

Ava clicked her tongue before saying anything. “I’m shocked. Shocked, I tell you.”

Did she know Clint had come over here last night? That sort of shocked me too, but it wasn’t like anything had happened.

“About?”

“A few dances and now you’re spending the night together.” Her tone carried a hint of accusation.

“He slept on my couch. And truth be told, he doesn’t really fit.”

“Wait! Your couch?” Ava sounded downright confused. “I’m standing outside his cabin and your truck is here. There cannot be two trucks like this in the state . . . or in the world.”

“With all his boxes, he would’ve had a hard time getting around. I invited him to my place, and we came over in his truck.”

“You drove his truck?”

“He wasn’t in any shape to drive. But he seems a bit better this morning.”

“Good to hear. He didn’t answer his phone, so I walked over to check on him and found your truck instead. I thought . . .” Ava chuckled. “You know what I thought.”

“Your brother loves fresh-baked bread. That’s why he agreed to let me fuss over him.”

“Not the only reason. I’d love to chat more, but since he’s fine, I’m going to the main house to start breakfast.
